Autoeroticism

From Encyclopedia of Sex and Sexuality

Jump to: navigation, search

Self-induced sexual activities and stimulations. These activities consist mainly of two types: masturbation and sexual fantasies. Masturbation may include the use of mechanical devices, and fantasies may either be created solely in one’s mind or be the product of reading or looking at erotica or pornographic movies or photographs. Autoerotic arousal may be carried out by persons when they are alone or when they are in the presence of sexual partners. The object of autoerotic activity may be arousal alone, arousal and stimulation carried to the point of orgasm, arousal during foreplay before physical contact with another person, or a variant of two-person sex with each partner engaging in autoerotic masturbation until orgasm. This latter form is increasingly popular, especially among gay men, who want the intimacy of a sexual experience but are very much concerned about the transmission of AIDS or other diseases.
