Group Sex
From Encyclopedia of Sex and Sexuality
In recent years the term “group sex” has been used to refer to sexual behavior involving four or more persons at the same time. While group sex has diminished considerably, particularly with the spread of herpes and aids, it still exists, especially at “sex clubs” found in many large cities. Despite public health officials’ attempts in many cities to close such clubs, they still exist, although they may insist on the use of condoms. These clubs usually cater to couples, but prostitutes may be available as escorts for unattached males. Sexual activities in these clubs may involve as many as fifty or more people at the same time.
Group sex contacts are also made in clubs that arrange parties at members’ homes or in resorts rented for an evening or weekend. Some researchers report that large group sex parties tend to have a dehumanizing effect on participants after a short while, resulting in more informal parties approximating social friendship groups of from three to fifteen couples. Because these are unorganized, there is no reliable data on how many couples in the United States are involved in them.
